Okies Have Magic, Too!
by AnnMarie

The latest APWR came as a bitter-sweet surprise. After way too long the gang finally treated us to an hour of amazing wizard rock and laughs, but a little geo blunder inspired an angry/informative editorial in this crazy Okie’s heart. Yes, Alex, Oklahoma City is in Oklahoma, not Kansas, and I am PROUD to say that magic is alive and strong here in the “west.”

Here in my hometown we like to, literally, get into the action of Harry Potter. School dress up days mean Harry and Hermione and Draco or roaming the halls somewhere, showing off elegant swishes and flicks that would bring tears of joy to dear old Professor Flitwick. Potter quotes and pictures are snuck into the school and city papers. Whether it’s a story about libraries or procrastination or even a large Wizard Rock review, the design editor made sure Harry had more fame than Edward Cullen. The magic doesn’t just stop inside school, though. We have our own Quidditch team and spectators. In a week the Facebook page went from just the players to nearly fifty fans, all of us wanting to form teams. Just like you’ve probably seen on the news and Youtube videos, our Qudditch game has been slightly modified since we haven’t stolen a flying broomstick yet, and unlike the cold-loving British we Okies only play in warm weather! While we wait for this ridiculously cold weather to end many have been re-re-rereading the series and making it impossible for libraries to keep the full collection on the shelves.

Many wizard rock bands have also made special appearances in Oklahoma this year. The Remus Lupins, The Whomping Willows, and Justin Finch-Fletchly have been traveling the country together all month and made a stop in OKC at the annual Yule Ball last week. Other “western” states that have recently been hit by the Wrock are Kansas and Missouri. For the rest of America, Whompy is touring longer than most other bands right now. He’ll be making stops all over the U.S. But back to us “westerns. “ Don’t forget to mark your calendars for April 17th for the Hallows and Horcuruxes 3 in Manhattan, Kansas. All your favorite bands will be there of course, and it’s so much fun to meet other crazies- I mean, dedicated fans- from around the country!

So, Alex and Mike, please study your geography and remember that magic and Wrock isn’t just for the coasts. We Middle-Americans are still huge HP fans, and we will forever raise our wands and shout “Accio!” because we’re too lazy to pick up the TV remote control. Magic is around the world, especially in the west!
